Rotator Cuff (frozen shoulder)

The rotator cuff is the term given to the four muscles that hold the upper arm to the shoulder blade. Problems affecting the function of these muscles will have a negative impact on the stability and movement of the shoulder.

Symptoms of problems with the rotator cuff

  • Pain: anything from mild ache to severe sharp pain
  • Restricted movement: especially lifting the arm up and out to the side
  • Weakness: difficulty lifting the arm out to the side

Problems in the rotator cuff usually result from weakness. Lack of use or misuse of muscles will make them less capable of withstanding stress. Exercising these muscles requires very specific types of motions not usually included in basic exercise plans.

What can I do about rotator cuff?

Exercise

Without a doubt the best treatment for most rotator cuff problems is targeted exercises. Getting the right exercises to help the precise issue may be your greatest challenge. See Desk Doctor’s assessment and exercise program to create your own rehabilitation plan.

Anti-inflammatory medication

May help reduce deep swelling in severe cases only.

Cortisone injections

This is for only the serious conditions which do not respond to any other treatment. Any more than three injections could create joint degeneration in years to come.

Other causes of shoulder pain

Problems in the rotator cuff usually result from due to weakness. Lack of use or misuse of muscles will make them less capable of withstanding stress. Exercising these muscles requires very specific types of motions not usually included in basic exercise plans.

Muscle tension

There are a lot of muscles in the shoulder and it is a common area to have tight muscles. The muscles between the neck and shoulder are the most commonly tight. Regular stretches are very effective at keeping tension down.

Arthritis

The wear and tear of joints can lead to pain. Arthritic joints are typically stiff and painful but there are certain stretches which can help.

Tendonitis

Irritation of the tendons can create swelling and pain. The most common tendon to be irritated is the supraspinatus tendon on the top of the shoulder.

Tendon tearing

Usually only occurs following a traumatic injury. This severe condition may require surgery depending on the extent of the damage.
